Nicola Wallace Dean

Community Organiser at Starting Point

I am a community organiser for Starting Point Community Learning Partnership in Stockport. I am also responsible for leading the expansion programme work here and am currently the member organiser for Greater Manchester.

Previously, I have worked in IT project delivery and training for the Ministry of Justice, Merseyside Police and IBM. The change to community work came about when my son was born and I realised there was very little support for an old-ish mum in my area. Together with my parents, I set up Start Point coffee shop as a social enterprise and we now support two flourishing businesses that fund community activity.

In my time as an organiser I have worked on various pieces of activities including a campaign against Iceland Foods against the implement of charging on a local car park, assisting local people to look at alternatives to perpetual food bank assistance and worked with a group of local women who are tidying up their estate by taking on furniture manufacturers to change their fire safety labelling.

I addition to my community, I am passionate about digital, social enterprise and being a mum. I am an RSA fellow and a trustee for The Good Things Foundation.
