How do we build Community Power while Meeting Communities’ Materials Needs?

This session will introduce Cooperation Town, a movement of community food co-ops, organising on streets and estates across the country.

The movement was set up to challenge the joint causes of poverty and social isolation, through a simple, adaptable, and scalable model of cooperative organising.

Cooperation Town, co-ops are small neighbourhood buying groups, providing members with extremely affordable groceries, sourced in bulk and distributed at a very low price.

The co-ops are owned by their members, who democratically decide on the day to day running of the group. Through taking collective action on a regular basis, members develop the skill and confidence to become organisers in their own communities.

While each Cooperation Town co-op is independent, the network is designed to share resources and support across the movement.

Hear from Cooperation Town organiser Kelly Fritzsche about how the model works in practice and how you can adapt it to your own community.
