Being empowered and organised in Nigeria

Christian Ihejirika – Member Organiser & Founder/CEO of Citizens First Foundation – believes true change can only begin in Africa “when her citizenry stops accepting mediocrity, bad governance, mismanagement, and corruption as the norm.”

In this blog, Christian explains how training in community organising is contributing to this change:

Citizens First Foundation made history at Star Arrival Hotels, Owerri – the capital city of Imo State in Nigeria – where they successfully delivered the first ‘Introduction to Community Organising’ training in the country over the weekend of 8th-9th December.

This initial cohort, trained in the principles and practice of community organising, are the first of many that the Foundation hopes to train in Nigeria and the Sub-Saharan region of Africa over the next couple of years.

It felt wonderful to know that the community organising work of Citizens First Foundation in Nigeria would encourage people and communities – irrespective of differences – to start speaking with one voice on common issues affecting them. Instead of trying to deal with these issues in isolation or choosing not to get involved – an indefensible position – our people must learn to act and work together in challenging the endemic social decay that has created a state of hopelessness in many families and communities in Africa.

Citizens First Foundation is a ‘not-for-profit’ organisation, incorporated to “support, promote, train, educate and empower people to change their lives and local community, by tackling apathy and challenging the environment that creates poverty and social insecurity.”

In addition to delivering projects in the Sub-Saharan region of West Africa, they also work with individuals, communities, and other agencies in the UK – primarily focused on community organising.
