A Guide to Popular Assemblies
I’m delighted to share Humanity Project’s new Guide to Popular Assemblies, now available for anyone to download and share.
Popular assemblies are one of the most powerful tools we have in the struggle to build a better society. They’re spaces to self-organise, to listen and deliberate, and to take action together on the issues that matter most where we live.
They offer a direct challenge to the politics of division that keeps us feeling powerless and isolated, creating instead a new kind of political culture rooted in agency, connection, and shared purpose.
Assemblies are already taking place in neighbourhoods across the UK, and we at Humanity Project are here to support groups who want to kick them off. This guide is part inspiration, part instruction – packed with practical ideas on strategy, planning, outreach, design, and facilitation.
Assemblies give communities real power, ensuring that we the people, not elites, make the decisions that shape our lives. As the guide explains: “they are schools of freedom and engines of self-organisation for the world to come”.
