The Grassroots Organisers’ Field Guide
This guide sets out a practical and principled approach to grassroots community organising. It is designed for community practitioners, volunteers, activists, and leaders who want to move beyond engagement and consultation, and towards building meaningful, sustained community power. It has taken the learning from working with 100s of community organisers and practitioners over the last 10 years and from the training of 1000s of people.
The guide follows a journey from understanding a neighbourhood, to building relationships, to taking action and creating change. Each section introduces key concepts, tools, and practices that can be applied in real-world settings. It is only a guide, and of course people will develop their own learning on the way.
It also doesn’t share a particular model and approach to community organising. Instead it seeks to follow our Community Organising Framework which allows for local context and flexibility in approach.
At its heart, community organising is based on the belief that people have the capacity to shape the systems that affect their lives if they are organised.
Use this guide as a starting point, a reference, and a companion in practice!
In solidarity and onwards…
