Cancer Support Salisbury

Issue-Based Organising Group

Cancer Support Salisbury is a support service based at The Quaker Meeting House in Salisbury, who meet once a week on Thursday from 2pm – 5pm. They offer support for those affected by cancer, their families, friends, and carers, in and around the Salisbury area.

Through provision of funding and grants, the group have been able to move to a larger venue, which provides spacious, light, and airy rooms in which to run the Drop-In, Complementary Therapies, which include Massage, Aromatherapy and Reflexology, and most recently, thanks to extra funding, Counselling. There is also a delightful garden to enjoy, weather permitting.

Through the lockdown period from March 2020 to October 2020 the group have offered weekly virtual Drop-In via Zoom, which has worked successfully. In addition to this they set up a dedicated Listening Ear Service (07926 841698) for people to call, and receive valuable practical, and emotional support via telephone.

Our passion, closeness and determination as a team inspired us to forge forward and recreate another service within our community.
Rachel Salter, Chairperson for Cancer Support Salisbury

The Community Organising funding has supported this group massively, to not only listen and support people but to strengthen a power base that could potentially influence life-changing decisions.

They were already listening to people but I am not sure they realised how much power they had. Working with these incredible people has inspired me and continues to teach me about community organising. They are a great example of people that want to embrace listening skills and bring people’s voices to the table of the decision-makers, to ensure that the cancer strategy is fit for purpose.
