Today we are celebrating stories of community organisers’ led projects framed in the context of the four themes featured in MHCLG’s vision document for stronger communities: ‘By deeds and their results: How we will strengthen our communities and nation’.
Theme One: Trust, connectedness and local pride
- Young leaders bring new skate park to Gloucester.
- Simon’s story (“I used to be a ‘rebel without a cause’ – now I have a cause!”).
- Hannah’s story (how community organising training helped Hannah and her fellow residents get together to make positive changes to their housing conditions).
Theme Two: Active citizenship and local control
- Voice of the people heard in City Council’s strategy review.
- Community organising power (how local councils can use community organising).
- Active listening lands Glastonbury a new PCSO.
Theme Three: Shared community spaces
- ‘Sincil Bank by the Sea’ community event brings unused space to life.
- How people took action to reclaim an unloved piece of land.
- Parkgate community lights the way with lantern walk (local people of Rotherham’s Rawmarsh and Parkgate area organising around a much-loved area of natural beauty called Green Hill).
Theme Four: Shared prosperity, with no community left behind
- Brighton’s first student housing cooperative.
- Guys Marsh Prison training day (delivering an Introduction to Community Organising Training Day at HM Guys Marsh Prison in Shaftesbury to 13 prisoners due to be released in the next year).
- Young listeners support peers with mental wellbeing.
