Digging Deeper: Tackling the Roots, Not Just the Symptoms
This summer marked ten years of Community Organisers — ten years of people listening and taking action where they live to make life fairer. Across the country, communities have stepped up: running foodbanks, creating sharing schemes, starting climate projects, and defending their neighbours when systems fail them.
But we know that’s not enough. Helping each other survive the storm matters. But if we want lasting change, we have to understand why the storm keeps coming.
That’s why we’ve spent the past year listening. Through our national network of Social Action Hubs, we’ve heard the same stories again and again — about rising prices, foodbank queues, division in our communities, and people feeling powerless. So this summer, more than 100 people joined a series of webinars to go deeper. Together, we explored the root causes: what’s really driving poverty, misinformation, and the sense that our voices don’t matter.
We have listened. We have understood the struggles. We have built powerful alliances. And now, we must act. It is no longer enough to respond to the symptoms of inequality—we must develop a strategy enabling us to go deeper. We must tackle the root causes.
Nick Gardham, CEO Community Organisers
The conversations were vibrant and honest. We used “problem tree” analysis to unpack what sits beneath the issues and where our collective power lies. Out of this, clear themes began to emerge — around dignity, belonging, power, and our shared future.
Now it’s time for the next step: turning listening into action.
This winter, we’re hosting a wave of national assemblies to join the dots between these themes and plan together for change.
📅 Dignity and Security in Everyday Life – 14 November
📅 Belonging and Division – 28 November
📅 Power and Voice in the Economy – 12 December
📅 Protecting Our Future Together – 16 January
Each assembly will bring people together to hear from organisers, share stories, explore ideas, and plan real action that goes beyond firefighting—to building a fairer society from the ground up.
Because it’s no longer enough to just respond to the symptoms. We have to go deeper, together, and tackle the root causes of inequality where we live.
